Sending and Receiving

Are there any duty & taxes levied?

Import duty is based upon the goods description and it's associated harmonised code (national variances exist). Other factors such as origin, reason from import may contribute to import duty relief.

Duty calculation is considering:

  • The value of the goods
  • Insurance costs
  • An proportionate amount of transportation cost or on the value of the goods and any assists

In either event this is also known as the Value for Customs. Other influences such as tooling charges, royalties etc. should also be considered.

Depending on a destination additional duties of levies may apply to port social, educational or infrastructure programs. VAT, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Consumption Tax may be applied at either the National Rate, Provincial Rate or in the case of Canada both. VAT/GST is calculated against the Value for Customs plus Import Duty and may include some value adjustments.
