What is an MID Code?

A MID or Manufacturers IDentification code is generated as an alternative to providing the full name and address of a manufacturer on paperwork presented/available to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the good's recipient.

U.S. formal customs entries require a MID code. This often represents the Shipper or Exporter rather than the manufacturer. In the case of a commercial shipment of textiles it is the manufacturer's MID (or full name and address) that is required.

A MID code presented to the U.S, FDA is always representative of the manufacturer as is the case for Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), part of USDA, where certain wood products need to be declared under the 'Lacey Act' (a law designed to combat illegal trade in wildlife, fish and plants).
