What is an EORI number?

EORI number is short for 'Economic Operators Registration and Identification Number’ and is a unique number throughout the European Union, it is assigned by Customs to a company or persons for import and export.

What is an EORI number used for?

It’s used by customs and other authorities to monitor and track shipments coming into and out of the European Union.

To trade internationally, a business or individual based in the EU needs to have an EORI number. If your business operates in multiple EU countries, you’ll need to have this number for each country.

Where do I get one for the UK?

Go to and register for one online.

The application form you fill in depends on whether you’re:

  • registered for VAT (if you did not get one when registering for VAT online)
  • not VAT-registered and you’re exporting
  • not VAT-registered and you’re importing

It normally takes around three days for this number to be issued, so it’s best to apply a few weeks before shipping. You will need to include your EORI number on your shipment’s commercial invoice

Anything else I need to bear in mind?

Whenever you’re shipping to the EU, make sure you have this number for the country you’re shipping to.

When applying for an EORI number you may need to add details of our UK import location on your application.  These details are:
Federal Express
Pincey Road
CM24 1FE
